SOPPA Parental Rights Procedures
Parents and guardians have the following rights regarding their child's student data under the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA):
1. Inspect and Review Student Information
Parents/guardians have the right to request access to any covered information collected or maintained by the school or by third-party operators providing educational technology services.
To request access, parents should submit a written request via email to mercurio@ogschool.org. The school will respond to requests within 45 calendar days, per legal requirements (although it would be extremely rare for a wait time of this length).
2. Request Corrections to Inaccurate Data
If a parent/guardian believes their child’s information is inaccurate, misleading, or violates privacy rights, they may request a correction.
Requests must be submitted in writing to mercurio@ogschool.org with an explanation of the requested correction.
The school will investigate and respond within 90 calendar days, and will either correct the data or provide a reason for denial. Again, it would be very rare for a wait time of this length.
3. Request Deletion of Student Data
Parents/guardians may request that certain data be deleted from school records, subject to legal and educational retention requirements. Deletion requests should be submitted in writing to mercurio@ogschool.org.
The school will determine if the data qualifies for deletion and respond within 90 calendar days.
4. Contact Information
