PowerSchool Data Breach
In late December 2024, PowerSchool, a prominent educational technology platform serving over 60 million K-12 students globally, experienced a significant data breach. Unauthorized individuals accessed the company's support platform using compromised credentials, leading to the potential exposure of sensitive information, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical records, and academic grades of both students and staff.
Upon discovering the breach on December 28, 2024, PowerSchool took immediate steps to contain the incident and prevent further unauthorized access. The company has since notified affected individuals and is offering complimentary identity theft protection services, along with two years of credit monitoring for adults.
While PowerSchool has not publicly disclosed the total number of affected individuals, reports indicate that the breach may have impacted data from approximately 6,505 school districts across the United States, Canada, and other countries. The attackers claim to have obtained personal information of over 62 million students and approximately 9.5 million teachers.
PowerSchool has stated that the incident is contained and that they do not anticipate the compromised data being shared or made public. They have also assured users that their services continue to operate normally without any disruptions.
PowerSchool is offering two years of complimentary identity protection services for all current and former students and educators whose information was determined to be involved. They are also offering two years of complimentary credit monitoring services for all adult students and educators whose information was determined to be involved.
