Comprehensive Personal Health and Safety and Sexual Education Act (Public Act 102-0522)
On June 14, 2022, the Illinois State Board of Education adopted the National Sex Education Standards as the Illinois Learning Standards for sexual health education. This was done in compliance with The Comprehensive Personal Health and Safety and Sexual Health Education Act.
- Districts have the option to provide sexual health instruction.
- Parents/guardians have the opportunity to opt their children out of the instruction.
- School districts that choose to provide instruction in sexual health education must develop or select a curriculum that is aligned with the new standards.
Oak Grove School utilizes Candor Health Education to provide this instruction. Programs are in alignment with the national sex education standards, but do not cover all standards.
Candor provides a presentation once a year to the following grade levels:
Grade 5: Puberty I: Understanding Changes
Grade 8: Teen Sexual Health
Erin's Law (Public Act 097-1147)
Erin's Law requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for children in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades. At Oak Grove, Erin's Law instruction is delivered through instruction partnering with Zacharias Center.
In grades K-2, students are taught about trusting instincts and about the definition of a lure. In grades 3-5, students are taught about specific lures. In grades 6-8, students are taught about affection lures, harassment, abuse, sexual assault, and force/threat.
Illinois Instructional Mandates
The Illinois Learning Standards establish expectations for what all students should know and be able to do in each subject at each grade. The standards emphasize depth over breadth, building upon key concepts as students advance. The standards promote student-driven learning and the application of knowledge to real world situations to help students develop deep conceptual understanding. Intentionally rigorous, the Illinois Learning Standards prepare students for the challenges of college and career. This document contains all areas of study that are mandated by the Illinois School Code and the Illinois Administrative Code. ISBE recommends that schools review the information on the following pages annually and prior to any ROE Compliance Review Visit.
