Weekly Update - 01/09/2023
Superintendent Update
Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful winter break. I wanted to circle back to an invite I shared before break. In the upcoming weeks, we will be conducting interviews for our new principal. We would like to invite parents to participate in the selection process. If you are interested in participating in this process, please email Jennifer McBride (mcbride@ogschool.org) by Friday, Jan. 13th. As of now, we have secured Wednesday, Feb. 8 (late afternoon/evening) for these interviews. We will be looking to form a team of parents who represent the diversity of our school. Once we have a list, we will narrow to a team and confirm with participants in mid-January. We appreciate your consideration.

SEL K-5
Welcome back! We hope your break was filled with acts of kindness, happy and memorable moments and of course some rest and mindfulness. While we wish that your entire break was filled with sunshine and rainbows, it is often when children experience changes in routine that you also see changes in their behavior. If you witnessed a few meltdowns after late nights, long days or simply not being in the routine of coming to school, you are not alone. Over the next few weeks students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade will learn about ways to calm down their strong emotions. We will learn songs, read stories, review the Zones of Regulation and learn the parts of the brain that help us control our emotions.

Winter Diagnostic Testing
Winter diagnostic testing is taking place this week. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning.
To help prepare your child for the i-Ready Diagnostic, encourage them to:
- Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
- Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
- Try not to worry about questions they do not know—remind them that it is expected they will only get about half of the questions correct.
- Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
Students who are absent this week will be scheduled for make-up testing next week. Please be sure your child brings a fully charged device to school this week and has working headphones for the test.
Talk Tuesday
The next Talk Tuesday will be on Tuesday, February 7th from 6:00-7:30 pm in the PD room with Biz Lindsay-Ryan, an expert consultant on diversity, equity and inclusion. She believes that we need to prepare our children to be healthy and effective communicators and that requires them to be able to navigate race and difference in the world around them. This session will ground parents’ experiences in research and begin a productive dialogue giving tools to parents that will benefit the entire family. We look forward to inviting our Oak Grove parents to this unique opportunity!
