Executive Orders - message from our superintendents

Oak Grove #68 is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and high-quality education for all students. We understand that recent Executive Orders have caused concern for some of our families and staff. We want to reassure you and address any questions you may have about the changing landscape.

Please know that both Oak Grove and  Libertyville High School D128 are dedicated to following all federal and state laws. While many federal policies are evolving, the fundamental rights of all students, regardless of immigration status, have not changed, including:

  • Every student has the right to attend school. We will not deny enrollment or discriminate based on immigration status.
  • Oak Grove does not request or maintain information regarding the immigration status of our students or their families.
  • All student records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and we do not share any identifying information without parental consent unless required by a valid court order.

If immigration or law enforcement agencies visit our schools unexpectedly, district administration will follow established Oak Grove policies and guidelines. These are designed to ensure that the District upholds its legal responsibility to protect student and family privacy while also supporting law enforcement in carrying out its duties. In the case of an unexpected visit, law enforcement agents would only be allowed entry to our buildings if they present a valid judicial warrant signed by a judge. We have carefully reviewed our district policies with school administrators and campus safety teams to ensure that our protocols are understood and followed. The front office staff have been given strict procedures to follow, should federal officials seek entry to our school.  Dr. McKay, Dr. Lemon, and/or Principal Murray will meet with any such officials, to ensure proper protocols and laws are followed.

Additionally, we have received questions about how the new Executive Orders will impact our funding, programs, and curriculum. In a Jan. 30, 2025, message to Illinois public schools, State Superintendent Tony Sanders wrote, “These actions do not require school districts to make any immediate changes at the board or classroom level. At this time, there have been no changes to federal legislation, regulations or funding that would warrant a local response, and all Illinois state laws remain intact.”

These are uncertain times, but we are making every effort to ensure our students remain safe and protected at Oak Grove. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Dr. McKay or Dr. Lemon.  Thank you.

With Oak Grove pride,

Dr. Lemon & Dr. McKay
